Always Have Something to Wear
Do you have a closet full of
clothes but never have anything to wear? How can you develop a wardrobe that
will always offer you a choice between great and excellent?
Decide on a color scheme. Start by planning your wardrobe around three neutral
colors such as black, white, khaki, navy, beige, or brown. Choose three other
colors that will go with the three neutral colors and with each other.
Clean out your closet! Go through your closet and eliminate all the clothes that
are not in the colors you have chosen. Next, toss out any clothes that don’t fit
or that you haven’t worn in a year. All the clothes left in your closet should
match or complement each other.
A couple of weeks after cleaning out your closet, go through it again to
eliminate all the rest of the things you should have thrown out the first time.
Identify your wardrobe theme and style. Do your clothes give you the look you
want? Start eliminating those items that are the right color but not your style.
Only buy clothes in your color scheme. Make a list of what you need and figure
out your budget. Buy clothing you can wear two or three seasons, especially if
combined with a blazer or jacket.
No impulse buying! You can spend a lot on bargains that could be better spent on
building up a great wardrobe. Avoid fads and trendy items that won’t last.
Instead, make thoughtful purchases each month that you will be happy about for a
long time to come.
Don’t feel that you have to buy the most expensive brand or “the best.” Go for
quality, but take into account your lifestyle as well.
Solids are easier to mix and match than prints. Be sure you have more solids
than prints.
Include accessories on your shopping list. You can add color and style with
shoes, handbags, belts, scarves, pins, and other items.
Don’t slack up on your vigilance. Take stock monthly and eliminate and replace
essential items in your wardrobe once you have built it up so that you are never
caught without what you need.
Set aside time to shop each week. Online or on foot, it’s your choice. Make
shopping a fun experience. Looking for the right colors first also makes
shopping easier.
Donate your rejects. They will be somebody else’s choice in color, style, and
size. Anything that doesn't fit or doesn’t go with your wardrobe isn’t a bargain
no matter how great a buy.
