Simple Style Rules

Style tips and rules to use for the best look for you.

  1. Update your look a little at a time. Instead of going all out, dressing from head to toe all at one time in urban gypsy, for example, try a peasant-style blouse. Explore whether the look is you before you invest too much in it. Also, if you drastically change your style overnight, you can look ridiculous to your friends.

  2. Trust yourself: If you think a style is too young for you, it probably is. Don’t risk having to return something to the store or forcing yourself to wear it because you bought it. It is not fun to wear something you are not comfortable in.

  3. On the other hand, take a risk. Don’t be afraid to try a new style just because it is out of your age group. Just be sure to try it on before you buy. Look in the mirror to see if it really highlights your best features. If you’re over 50 and you look and feel great in short skirts, wear them. If you’re 20 and enjoy fancy pantsuits, do it!

  4. Explore new styles. If you’re conservative, try a fringed handbag; sophisticated, try a full, gathered skirt; or hip, try a formal pantsuit. See who you are when dressing outside of your usual mode. You may go back to your own look, but you can gain insight and creative ideas by leaving it for a day now and then. Most of all, have fun with fashion. See it as a fun thing to do and not as something that should be followed.

  5. When in doubt, wear black. Black clothing always looks sophisticated and expensive. It always flatters the figure.

  6. Don’t buy cheap items just to be buying. This is a waste of money, though you probably already know that. Be inventive with what you have; mix and match accessories and tops with bottoms, trade items with your friends, or borrow sweaters from your sisters, but save your money up to buy quality items.

  7. Avoid fads. They are fast lived and soon over. Go with general trends. Some things, like pants with clean lines, simple tops, and knee-length skirts, will always be in style.

  8. Don’t sacrifice your professional appearance for fashion. See-through tops, tight cuts, high slits, extremely low necklines, outfits that look like lingerie, and other inappropriate to sleazy fashions are never in style for the professional woman. Not ever! Don’t lose your professional image by succumbing to fads. However, after work, you might slip into something more comfortable.

  9. Remember your inner self. Designer Kenneth Cole said, "To be aware is more important than what you wear." Use fashion to express who you are, but remember you are more than the clothes you wear. Inner peace and a happy glow will make your clothes look even better on you. Wisdom, spiritual nourishment, and caring relationships will all enhance the way your clothes look on you. We have all seen the beautiful, well-dressed woman who is unattractive because of the scowl, indifference, neediness, or other negative emotions reflected in her face and body language. No clothing, however costly or beautiful, can take the place of a genuine smile, though the right clothing can certainly set it off.
