a great resource for finding a wide selection of styles in the plus sizes, where
a size 20 is as common and “normal” as a size 10. Anna Scholz, a London designer
who is a size 20 herself, is one of many designers who are working to overcome
“sizism” by offering the latest fashions in sizes 8-26. "I think it's going to
take ages for things to change and for shops to stock larger sizes as a part of
their fashion sections," she says in Fashion UK. "There is racism, sexism, and
sizism, and I have a non-sizist philosophy."
While it may take time for plus sizes to become commonly available in most
stores, they are already given equal visibility on the Internet. Shoppers no
longer have to hunt on foot for stores with plus-size departments. They can
access up-to-date markets online in minutes and see the latest styles in their
size. They don’t have to go anywhere to get a catalog or wait for one to come in
the mail.
Speaking of catalogs, it’s noteworthy that one company, Girlfriends LA, has
taken an innovative approach to featuring large-size junior apparel. In its
catalog, sizes up to 3XL or 25 are listed right alongside all the other sizes
without drawing any special attention to them. They are not highlighted as plus
sizes or special sizes or hard-to-find sizes. The subtle approach of making no
special distinctions among sizes sends the message that if you’re over a size
13/14, you’re as normal as anyone else.
