Fitting Pointers
Additional tips for picking
the right clothing for you.
Long sleeves should come just below the wrist bone with only a little ease
for movement. Sleeves shouldn’t be too tight or too loose. When trying on a
long-sleeved garment, move your arms in a full circle to make sure you have a
full range of motion.
A blouse that buttons in front should never gap open at the bust line. If the
problem is not size but rather that the buttons are spaced too far apart, sew on
a snap or hook and latch.
After having a skirt or dress hemmed, put it on and check it out to make sure
that the hem is straight all the way around. If it’s not, either because it was
not hemmed properly or because it needs to be adjusted to your hips or tummy,
have it re-hemmed.
Before buying a long, formal gown, make sure there is about one inch of
clearance between the gown and the floor. It should fall no closer to the floor
than a full inch.
The little details like the length of your jacket sleeves or the place your
pants hem rest can mean the different between a great-looking outfit or an
outfit that is, at best, passable.
Again, if you want a perfect fit, have a professional tailor alter the outfit to
your measurements.
Technology may come to the rescue and solve the problem of getting the size
right. Some predict that with the advent of “avatars,” or 3-D models of your
image in your exact measurements, mass customization will result. Your clothing
will be tailor made just for you.
