Develop a Signature Style
A signature style is like an
identifying statement or image.
A signature style is like an identifying statement or image. For example,
Phillip Bloch is never seen without his Kangol cap, Anna Wintour always wears
her dark sunglasses, and Donatella Versace keeps her hair corn blond. You can
also develop a signature style and use it to draw attention to your best
features or hide any flaws.
To develop a signature style, begin with an assessment of your overall current
style. Is it modern, traditional, flamboyant, futuristic, casual, or natural and
simple?
What would you like to achieve with a signature style? What would be your main
purpose? To stand out, make a specific statement, enhance a feature, or just
have fun?
Study famous style makers and notice what makes them memorable. What kinds of
"props" do they use? Karl Lagerfeld has his fan and Britney Spears shows off her
belly button.
What would you be most comfortable changing about your style? Your wardrobe
colors, your accessories, or your hair, for example? What would you be least
willing to change? Experiment with making changes in stages. Try the new look
and see if it works for you. Change your hair a little at first, then all the
way if you can see that it gives you what you want. Try a bold new wardrobe
color one item at a time. Try a shirt or scarf.
Using accessories is a safe and easy way to experiment with creating your
signature style. Try a vintage handbag, big pins, special belts, colorful silk
scarves, or sunglasses. Don’t overlook hair accessories and special jewelry.
If a look fits your style and personality, don’t hesitate to try it out.
Experiment and play until you get it just right.
