Tips on Buying Her Lingerie
There’s no gift like lingerie,
but how do you pick out something you’re sure she’ll love? Lingerie is, after
all, intimate apparel. It comes in endless selections, and to make the right
choice, you will need to know her at least well, if not intimately.
First, you will want to pick something that will
flatter her figure. Put some thought into what parts of her body she is
comfortable with and choose lingerie that will complement those parts. Think
about her preferences, too, though. Not every woman would be comfortable baring
her bottom in a sexy thong, for example, even if you think she would look good
in one. A common mistake is to buy lingerie you would like to see her in,
instead of buying lingerie she would like to wear.
Flatter her figure.
What does she like the most about her body? What does she like the least? What
is she comfortable revealing? What does she tend to conceal? Bring to mind
anything you’re heard her say about her body. “My thighs are too big.” “I like
my knees.” “I’m self-conscious about my small breasts.” “I wish my breasts
weren’t so large.” “My bottom is too flat/big/flabby/small…” or “My hips feel
like they are the perfect size now.”
Nice legs? Buy her something short to show them off in. Baby doll pajamas
or a short gown with matching panties are safe options. Or how about a long,
sheer gown with high leg slits?
Accent good cleavage with a halter or top obviously designed for display. Fill
out a small, high bust with a lightly padded built-in bra to add proportion. A
sheer, gathered top will also enhance the appearance of fullness.
Smooth, toned arms can be highlighted with a camisole or sleeveless gown.
Choosing prints: Cheerful fun prints with designs such as cherries,
butterflies, or clouds can appeal to her inner child. Animal prints, lace, and
bold colors might appeal to her wild side.
Choosing colors: Red, black, white, and cream almost always look good.
But you might know her well enough to guess she would prefer a soft powder blue
or a vivid violet. If you’re not sure, go with a safe color.
Choosing fabrics: If you like touching it, she’ll like wearing it. Silk,
velvet, satin, flannel, and high-quality cotton, which can be soft as a cloud
and nearly transparent, are all appealing. If you’re buying online, choose
lingerie made of a fabric you already know and like.
Getting the right size. Ask her! This is the best way to find out. Or you can
snoop in her dresser drawer, ask her sister, or guess. Guessing can be tricky.

Key Styles of Lingerie
Knowing what an item is called can make shopping for lingerie easier.
A camisole is a sleeveless top. It often comes with matching panties. A camisole
can be worn under a jacket.
A Teddy is a one-piece outfit, like a bodysuit.
A negligee is a loose, usually sheer or transparent, gown. A Peignoir set
includes a matching sheer robe.
A bustier style refers to a strapless, elongated bra that gives extra lift to
the breasts.
A thong is a panty that covers the front but has only a thin strap in the back.
A chemise is a straight gown and may be short or long.
A baby doll is a short gown that fits around the bust and flares toward the
hemline.
Tap pants are a short, soft version of boxing shorts.
Pajamas consist of a top and long pants, like men’s P.J.’s.
Wrapping it Up
Presentation means a lot to many women. No matter how great the present, you
don’t want to hand it to her unwrapped in the shopping bag. Have it wrapped up
professionally, with lots of lush, delicate tissue. You might include a book of
poetry, a candle, perfume, lotion, or a bottle of champagne. You could also put
extra items in a basket along with the lingerie wrapped separately. Be creative
in packaging your gift.
